Outreach Committee
John Tate, Sue Harding, John Rutter, Joy Sieg, Barry Tatchell, Deanna Wilson,
and Pat Falby.
The Committee works hard and enthusiastically at maintaining
a number of outreach projects on behalf of St. Stephen's.
The Outreach Committee operates on a current budget of $750 annually,
augmented by designating special offerings throughout the year,
and this year we received a bonus fund from the Special Gifts Fund
to assist us in special projects.
The causes that we supported this year on behalf of the congregation are as follows:
-
The Compass, which is the community outreach center on the Lakeshore,
ministering to those in need of food and counselling.
Our representative on The Compass board is Jyll Norris.
-
St. Stephen's sends volunteers to serve food to the homeless
on Tuesday and Friday at Mavis shelter and Peel family shelter in Mississauga
and the outreach committee schedules these volunteers.
More volunteers are needed for this outreach.
-
Jyll Norris and her family host a child each summer from Belarus,
and Jyll coordinates the project for Mississauga.
The effort is proving significant to prolong the life of children affected by
the Chernobyl disaster of 20 years ago.
Other families are invited to participate in this very rewarding effort.
-
We assisted Lynda Appleby in purchasing medicine for her trip to Honduras,
where she and her daughter Lorraine worked with the poor in that country
to provide medical assistance.
This year also they were accompanied by four additional ladies from our congregation
in a wonderful outreach from St. Stephen's.
-
The committee, on behalf of the congregation, dedicates our special offerings
to assist local outreach centers such as The Open Door, the Food Bank,
the Compass, and other projects.
-
Barry Tatchell is our representative for Habitat for Humanity Halton,
which is a new project that we support, to build two homes,
with other churches, in Burlington, for those that need housing assistance.
-
The committee supported the fair trade coffee effort
and subsidize the additional cost for the year.
-
The committee supported financially our Youth Group in their trip to Mexico.
Our annual outreach Sunday was held on January 21,
and the topic was on The Compass, and we were assisted by two representatives
from The Compass, Michelle Craig and Elizabeth McGregor
and their presentation was very special.
We wish to thank all those who generously support us and our work
on behalf of the congregation, and to invite any others to join our committee
to assist in carrying on outreach efforts by St. Stephen's on the Hill.
Respectfully submitted,
Pat Falby
